Public Policy and the Democratic Intellect

چکیده
Thank you for that kind introduction. I am tempted to quote the words of Robbie Burns from his poem 'To A Louse': 'O wad some pow'r the giftie gie us, To see oursels as others see us.' But I fear that if I really did have that power, what I should actually see would be far less flattering than the introduction I have just received. So, perhaps instead, I should just quote the famous line of Adlai Stevenson, who on being fulsomely introduced simply said: 'after that introduction, I shall be extremely interested to hear what I have to say'.

Ewen Speed and Russell Mannion correctly identify several contours of the challenges for health policy in what it is useful to think of as a post-democratic era. I argue that the problem for public health is not populism per se, but rather the distinctive populism of the right coupled with the failure of the left to develop compelling counternarratives. Further, defences of ‘science’ must be te...
